For 25 years the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children's Cancer Program (KDCCP) was the only Kiwanis organization of its kind in the world; raising over $2million for children and young adults with cancer at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland Oregon. Then in October 2010, with the courage and leadership of PNW Governor Frank Morehouse, Kiwanians in Seattle and Vancouver B.C. embraced the KDCCP model of funding Kiwanis Fellowships; this was the start of the PNW District Emphasis - KCCP - the Kiwanas Children's Cancer Program. 2010 To The Cure! Why is the emphasis on Teaching/Research Hospitals? In 1998, Changes in technology drove KDCCP to review our mission and to reevaluate what was important to us. We decided that Kiwanians could make a significant impact in helping to cure children of cancer, and the best way to do that was to make certain that we trained the very best young physicians and researchers. This could only be accomplished at a teaching/research hospital like Doernbecher.
Doernbecher has the largest staff of pediatric oncology providers with specialists in every cancer subspecialty; leading programs in leukemia and brain tumors; Oregon's only stem cell and bone marrow transplant program and the state's largest chemotherapy infusion center dedicated solely to adelescents, young adults and children. What's more, Doernbecher was chosen to join a select group of pediatric cancer centers nationwide, the Children's Oncology Group Phase 1 Consortium, allowing researchers to study newly designed, and potentially beneficial drugs in children whose cancer has become unresponsive to standard treatments. Doernbecher was recently named one of the best children's hospitals in the nation by U.S. News and World Report..."At OHSU Doernbecher we believe that every child deserves the best.
